Monte, 536 m high and dominating the surrounding area, was first seen by Pedro Alvares Cabral's crew on Easter Day in 1500. It is made up of gentle hills covered with mata atlântica, mangroves and beautiful beaches with reefs. The park is rich in biodiversity. Birds, mammals: several species of monkey (including the spider monkey), anteaters, sloths, deer, armadillos. And even jaguars. The Pataxo Indians have always lived in this area, and since 2000, the park has been managed by their community in conjunction with IBAMA.
