Lisboners flock to this incredible stretch of land at weekends to enjoy its shores: all they have to do is cross the mouth of the Sado by boat from Setúbal. The horizon is disfigured by a huge resort, but the peninsula itself is a succession of pine forests, sandbanks and beaches as far as the eye can see. The peninsula of Tróia was home to a Roman city (1st century AD), the remains of which can be admired at the site of Caetobriga, which is open to visitors. There are four hiking trails that allow you to discover the peninsula, which cover several levels of difficulty, from one to two hours of walking (www.troiaresort.pt).
