Housed at the end of a fairy-tale bay, Hanavave is the meeting point for boaters from all over the world. Several peaks of ochre basalt draped in greenery rise above a black sand beach, and take on colours straight out of an artistic delirium at sunset. The first French sailors who landed here saw phallic shapes in these peaks and named the place "la baie des Verges". Shortly afterwards, the Catholic missionaries, no doubt outraged, claimed that the peaks had the shape of veiled virgins and renamed the place "the Bay of Virgins". The story is authentic!
