According to the excavations carried out in 1964-1965 on the site of Ha'atuata, Hane would have been the first place of settlement of the Polynesians in the Marquesas. The dates, first estimated at around 250-300 AD, have since been strongly questioned. Today, this small village nestled in the depths of a narrow valley, houses a small sea museum open on request (+689 40 926 013), displaying several traditional pirogues. A few options for lunch are waiting for you, but there are no crowds in the area, so let's hope they are open when you pass by... Continuing the road to its end, you will reach the village of Hokatu.
