The 2,213 inhabitants of Ua Pou (for 105 km2, the highest density of the archipelago) are mainly concentrated in Hakahau, the island's capital, and live mainly from fishing, copra, agriculture and handicrafts; wood and stone carvings are indeed very famous there.Hakahau is a small, quiet village with a concentration of shops, restaurants and guesthouses. Located in the northeast and bordered by a black sand beach, it offers a striking setting. Ua Pou being a land of the Marquesan population (populated since 150 B.C.), its chief town hosts the Motu Haka cultural federation, which organizes the Marquesas Islands Arts Festival every four years in December.
