The deep and well-sheltered bay of Faanui is located northeast of Vaitape. The wharf erected at its tip is commonly known as the "Americans' wharf": the Americans are indeed the originators of this wharf since it was built after the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1942 by the American Army Engineers. The village of Faanui, which is a necessary passage to get to Anau, does not have many points of interest, if not the Taianapa marae, or at least what is left of it: an altar (ahu), and a paving of volcanic stones, located on the land on the mountain side, on the first foothills of the hill.
