The sublime Paopao Bay was named "Cook's Bay" during the navigator's third voyage in 1777. Composed of a narrow and deep indentation, surmounted by an imposing rampart of basaltic walls, it reserves one of the most beautiful landscapes that Polynesia has to offer. At the end of the bay, Pao Pao is home to the old church of St. Joseph (PK 10.5), which houses a mural painted by Peter Heyman in 1948 depicting the Holy Family. Take time to stop at the market (PK 9.5), open every day from 6 am to 5 pm; on Sundays from 4:30 am to 8 am. To reach the agricultural high school and the Belvedere, it is best to pass by Opunohu Bay.
