Place of residence of the royal family of Pomare - Queen Pomare IV was even born here in February 1813 -, this village was a major centre of Protestantism at the beginning of the 19th century. It is moreover here that King Pomare II was converted in 1812. The first temple on the island - the octagonal Ebenezer Temple - was erected here in 1833. Built in wood in place of the great marae Taputapuatea of Moorea, its octagonal shape evokes the eight tentacles of the octopus Fee de Papetoai. Administrative capital until the beginning of the 20th century, it is here that the official acceptance of the French Protectorate by Queen Pomare IV took place in 1842.
