This peaceful village was, along with Papetoai, a major centre of Protestantism at the beginning of the 19th century. The first religious printing house and the South Sea Academy - attended by King Pomare III - were established here in 1817 and 1821 respectively. A temple was also erected there at the beginning of the 20th century, and the oldest marae on the island, that of Umarea, has been discovered. The Vaioro waterfall is one of the points of interest in the town, and the path to it starts in front of the temple and runs along the Tehuatevai valley, and takes about an hour's walk. The Moorea Lagoonarium is a popular place to learn about the aquatic world.
