With its 28,103 inhabitants, Punaauia is a popular residential area. It has guesthouses, several excellent hotels, restaurants, the University of French Polynesia, shopping centres including a large Carrefour, as well as the Marina Taina, a favourite meeting point for locals who like to stroll around, enjoy a drink, lunch or a lively dinner. Punaauia is also home to the famous and no less exciting Tahiti and Islands Museum, still under renovation when we last visited in 2019. About 15 km south of Papeete, it is a pleasant place to stay because the lagoon is never far away.
