The town of Papenoo (literally "converging waters") is home to the mouth of the island's largest river, the Maroto, which supplies part of Tahiti's electricity through hydroelectric power stations. Located about 20 kilometers from Papeete, it is very popular for its black sand beaches and surfing spots. Don't expect to catch a wave there on the weekend, but you will easily find a place on the beach where you can relax and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the area. Papenoo also marks the start of the Papenoo-Mataiea ferry route, which is not always passable in its entirety, so be sure to ask before you set off.
