Nestling at the foot of the Schwarzenbourg ruins, this pretty village was once home to Albert Schweitzer. The famous doctor (but also pastor, theologian, musicologist, organist and Nobel Peace Prize winner) grew up here after being born in Kaysersberg. In 1913, Albert Schweitzer left the valley with his wife to found the Lambaréné bush hospital in Gabon. In 1928, he built a house in Gunsbach with money from the Goethe Prize for his work. The organ in the "simultaneous church" was designed by Albert Schweitzer. A walk from Gunsbach leads to a moving sculpture of him.
