Located between Arabi and Meraux in St. Bernard Parish, just east of downtown New Orleans, Chalmette is most famous for having seen the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815. Ironically, this last major battle of the Second War of Independence (also known as the Anglo-American War of 1812) took place after a treaty ending the war was signed in Ghent, Belgium, on December 24, 1814, without the knowledge of either side. For a bite to eat in the area, we recommend Rocky & Carlo's restaurant with its Sicilian and neo-Orleans cuisine.
