Ghajnsielem means "spring of Salem" and refers to a spring around which the great master Perellos had an arcade built in 1700 containing public washbasins and fresh water spouts. Located on the heights of Mgarr, this village of 3,200 inhabitants has a central square on which a monument honors Anglù Grech, a farmer to whom the Virgin is said to have asked to build a church. This beautiful church built in 1820 was dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. Its bells come from Villedieu-les-Poêles, in Basse-Normandie. The big church that you can see from the ferry when you arrive in Gozo is that of Our Lady of Lourdes.
