Historically, the town owes much to the great French master Emmanuel de Rohan, who raised this large village to the status of a city and endowed Zebbug with a triumphal arch, which today seems rather unremarkable. The name of the town means "olive" and comes from the olive cultivation, which was once practised here intensively. However, it was its weavers who made Zebbug world-famous. Cotton, which was once harvested in the area, was woven here and exported to Italy, France and Spain. The central square with its corbelled and balcony houses is worth a visit
