Located between the peninsulas of Senglea and Birgu, Copiscua also takes its name from conspicuus meaning remarkable, for its role during the great siege of 1565. It is the youngest of the Three Cities as it was built in the early 18th century, on the same plan as Senglea and Valletta, and nestled behind Dock No. 1 built in the 19th century in Dockyard Creek. It was in 1959 that the British authorities decided to take full commercial advantage of this incredible natural harbour. The creek between Cospicua and Marsa became, after many works, the main industrial pole of the country thanks to its dry docks. Today it is perfectly equipped and employs a considerable number of workers. Shipbuilding and repair of cargo ships, liners or supertankers are carried out in seven dry docks.
