In the southwest of the country, the park is known for its variety of landscapes concentrated in an area of relatively modest size, especially for Alaska, which is not found anywhere else. It is located between three mountain ranges, with two volcanoes, the Iliamna and the Redoubt, a coastline composed of rainforests as found in the southeast, a tundra as well as numerous lakes. Despite all these assets, the park is one of the least visited in the state, with only 5,000 visitors on average per year. It can only be reached by plane and bear viewing agencies organize its overflight with bear observation from Anchorage or Homer.
