The main ridge of the caldera is prolonged by another one in a line that runs to the southern tip of the island, and that corresponds to the volcanic rift of the Cumbre Vieja (which means "old summit"). Between the caldera to the north and the Cumbre Vieja to the south, lies the Cumbre Nueva. It is a lower ridge that rises to around 1,400 meters. Like the caldera, it forms a sort of circus; it is open to the west, but much shallower and less closed. It also owes its origin to a gigantic landslide. The volcanic activity of the island since the Conquest is concentrated entirely on the Cumbre Vieja, whose peaks approach 2,000 m.
