During World War II, on the night of December 20-21, 1943, the Četnik (an anti-communist Yugoslav armed force founded by Draža Mihailović who made a pact with the Nazis to turn against their countrymen) massacred hundreds of women and children here. The entire village was ravaged, with only five people miraculously escaping the slaughter. Today, more than 4,000 people live in the village of Vranić, located in the municipality of Barajevo. The main monument of the village is the all-wooden Church of the Forty Martyrs.
