Monaghan(Muineachán in Irish, literally "little grove") is a lively town built around the Diamond, the name given to most central town squares in Ulster. The city embodies the impact of the Plantation on the region (the process of colonisation of Ireland by English royalty, notably by the settlement of English and Scottish farmers on land taken from the Irish). The arrival of settlers in the 17th century, the prosperity of the flax industry in the 18th century and the wealth of Monaghan in the following century testify to this. Nearby is the picturesque village of Glaslough, 6 miles away.
