Monaghan(Muineachán in Irish, literally "little grove") is a lively town built around the Diamond, the name given to most central town squares in Ulster. The city embodies the impact of the Plantation on the region (the process of colonization of Ireland by English royalty, notably through the settlement of English and Scottish farmers on land taken from the Irish). The arrival of settlers in the 17th century, the prosperity of the flax industry in the 18th century and the wealth of Monaghan in the following century all bear witness to this. Nearby is the picturesque village of Glaslough, just under 10 kilometers away.
