An hour from the capital, Nueva Gorgona was founded in 1913 to accommodate the inhabitants of Gorgona, a village on the banks of the Río Chagres that was flooded by the waters of Lake Gatún for the construction of the canal. There are several second homes and two beautiful black-sand beaches: Playa Gorgona and Playa Malibú. But don't dream of a wilderness setting - the city and its buildings are just around the corner. If you don't have a car, it's more than an hour's walk to reach these beaches, located around 7 km from the Pan-American Highway. And if you come by car, you'll have to pay a small fee for parking.
