The name of this modest fishing and farming village comes from cambute, a large edible sea snail known elsewhere in Panama as cambombia, or queen conch. A little further on, you come to Los Buzos or Playa Cambutal, a magnificent beach where Italians, Americans and Basques have settled and fallen in love with this bay close to Cerro Hoya park. Let's hope that this bay, with its high tourist potential since the road was paved, doesn't attract investors more sensitive to the greenback than to nature. As in Isla Cañas, thousands of turtles arrive here in season, whales jump and the waves are perfect. Even further afield, the coast jealously guards its beautiful, unspoilt beaches.
