San Cristobal is a large village founded in 1958 to accommodate Ngäbe Bugle families working on the surrounding banana plantations. The village is still mainly Indian, but other mestizo families have moved in because of the high rents in Bocas. There is a school, a health center, a soccer field, some churches... In the middle of the year 2000, a handful of women from the village got together, with the support of the French tourism association La Route des Sens, to sell their handicrafts within the framework of a cooperative and to welcome tourists. Today the cooperative has grown and cultural activities are offered: discovery of medicinal plants and cocoa cultivation on a small path, handicraft work, typical Ngäbe cuisine... Generally impressed at the beginning by this village, which is far from the "Caribbean" postcard, travelers always come back full of emotions due to the exchanges.
