Located about 5 km northwest of the island's capital, Santo Antonio, it is the largest roça on the island, but certainly also the one with the most poverty. Founded in 1822, it is the first cocoa plantation of the whole archipelago. Some buildings have been preserved and completely renovated. Formerly owned by the Portuguese royal family, it now functions as a village with a school, a hospital and a church. Surrounded by a luxuriant forest, on the edge of the ocean, the luxury hotel, Roça Sundy offers various activities such as diving, cooking workshops and bird watching.
