In the heart of the country, between the Montagnes and Celles mountains, this park is quite difficult to access. It covers nearly 40 000 ha of forest, savanna and marsh. It was created in 1984 to protect the animals displaced under the Mahaweli Development Project. Much less tourism than most other parks, it has the advantage of a nature less distorted by mass tourism. There are large mammals such as wild elephants, wild buffalo, leopards, deer, wild boar and bears. There are also many species of birds and reptiles and some crocodiles. The most important cultural site is in Buduruwayaya in the south-western part, near the confluence of the Amban and Kalu rivers.
