A trip to Mozambique may be motivated by the sole aim of exploring Bazaruto National Park. This park, with its Indian Ocean landscapes, is on every postcard of the destination: a sand dune with a backdrop of a lagoon iridescent with turquoise water. A true pearl of nature, still untouched by the fever of destructive mass tourism. A real privilege to walk here, or better still, to stay here. In 2021, the Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards ranked Bazaruto as the best island destination in Africa. Located in the Indian Ocean, opposite Vilankulo, the archipelago extends over 1,430 km2 of marine protected area and comprises five islands with a total area of 120 km2. Bazaruto, the largest, is recognizable by its large sand dunes. Opposite, the archipelago's second largest island is Benguerra. The closest to Vilankulo, Magaruque, is a popular stopover for beach picnics and snorkeling on the reef just ahead. Santa Carolina, nicknamed "Paradise Island", is the furthest from Vilankulo, close to the coast but facing the north coast of Bazaruto. Very unspoilt, it is reserved for connoisseurs in search of sea turtles. Finally, Bangué is not visited by excursions. This sandy confetti with its few trees provides a link between the rest of the archipelago and the Ponta São Sebastião peninsula.
