Perched on the hill, the ruins of an ancient Sogdian citadel called Nour dominate the plain. It is between these walls that Alexander the Great installed a part of his garrisons, in preparation for the capture of Samarkand. Nourata was indeed the northern gate of the Zeravshan valley: it is located at the limit of the Nourata mountains which guard the access to the vast sandy desert which extends towards north. It became a great pilgrimage center in the 10th century and continues to welcome believers from all over the world to gather at the holy spring. Today, it is known for its astrakhan trade and marble production.
