Around 25 km south of Paramaribo, Lelydorp is the capital of the Wanica district. With around 20,000 inhabitants, it is Suriname's second most populous town, after Paramaribo. The town was originally called Kofi Djompo after a black-brown rebel named Kofi, who was captured by the Dutch and beheaded as a warning to other resisting slaves. Lelydorp lies halfway between Paramaribo and Zanderij, and its inhabitants are predominantly Javanese and Hindustani: some of Lelydorp's streets, such as Dessa Sidodadi and Tawajari, are typically Indonesian names. Don't miss its butterfly garden!
