Excavations begun by the British in the 1870s and continued by the Italians from 1912, then the Greeks after 1978, have established that human settlement on these lands dates back to the Bronze Age and was uninterrupted until the Classical period. Nowadays called Trianta (or Trianda according to Latin transcriptions), Ialyssos was, along with Lindos and Kamiros, one of the three great prosperous cities established by the Dorians. The ancient port served as a bridge between the Aegean and the East, taking on strategic importance in the region's commercial exchanges. The upper city, or acropolis, was built on Mount Filerimos and became the heart of political and religious power. Today, the ancient acropolis of Ialyssos is a unique site, recounting the history of the island and the city through the centuries and successive occupations, from the Dorians to the Italian Fascists, via the Byzantines, the Crusader Knights and the Ottomans! Beyond the obvious historical interest, you'll enjoy splendid views of the sea, in a wooded environment. On the coast, you'll find miles of beach and winds that are ideal for kitesurfing, wingfoiling and windsurfing. Trianta-Ialyssos is 10 km from Rhodes town, but the modern seaside resort with its resorts is not very charming: we recommend you come here for the day and stay in Rhodes town. Buses run every half-hour in season.
