Located on the shores of the bay of the same name, in the southern part of the Burin Peninsula, this charming little village of less than 1,300 souls is a renowned fishing haven. It is believed that its name comes from the Portuguese word fortuna which means "port of good fortune". Its biggest attraction is the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve, a major fossil site that offers exhibits and guided field trips during the summer months. Each year, thousands of tourists pass through Fortune on their way to the nearby French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
