At 3,726 m, Gunung Rinjani is the highest mountain in the Sunda archipelago. It's often lost in the clouds by morning, and sometimes you can't see the whole thing for weeks on end. A very active volcano, Rinjani last erupted in September 2016.The Balinese regard it as a sacred mountain and devote great worship to it: every year, on the occasion of pekelan, they throw jewels into the crater lake and make offerings. As for the Sasak, they dedicate ceremonies to it on the nights of the full moon.
