Located on the Atlantic coast 80 kilometers from Philadelphia, Atlantic City is famous for its great marina and, above all, for its amazing architecture, formerly 12 and of which only 7 are still open today (plus two casinos that opened in 2018). If it is known to be the focal point of gambling, the city's history is much more interesting than a slot machine.Absecon Island was originally a mosquito-infested sand bank, but in the 1860 s, due to its ideal geographical location (accessible from several large urban areas such as New York and Philadelphia), the area grew and became a spa resort. On June 26, 1870, a wooden bridge between the beach and the city was built: the famous Boardwalk. The walk continued to expand and the expansion showed the wheelchair in 1884. The rich vacationers grew up by someone, comfortably sitting in a baldchair chair. It is always possible to do it for about twenty dollars… In the 1920 s, chief Enoch L. Johnson took control of the city and transformed it during Prohibition into a city of amusement and freedom concerning alcohol in particular. He uses his political position (county treasurer) to make it a lawless area and reaches the peak of his popularity during his years of between and until Johnson's imprisonment in 1941. The excitement is that it is the streets of Atlantic City that appear on the game board of the original Monopoly edition in 1936. Frank Sinatra has been singing many times. After the hurricane of 1944 and the expansion of more exotic tourist destinations (such as the Bahamas or Florida) and more accessible with the arrival of commercial airlines, Atlantic City became, in the 1960 s, a nearly dead city with high unemployment and low population density. We have to wait for the bill of 1976 legalizing the game in the city (whereas the only state in the country authorizing the game was Nevada, since 1936) for a new wave of tourism to begin. The 1920 s, jazz, a feeling of prohibition are far from the current reality.Today Atlantic City is a city where the bling-bling casinos succeed without great charm but with some idea of the party. However, it has some difficulties and its attendance is falling. Few cities on the east coast were affected as much by the 2008 financial crisis. In 2014, three of its most emblematic casinos put the key under the door. Two years later, with Trump Taj Mahal in turn, the city is on the brink of bankruptcy, and is only doing so thanks to the very generous loan granted by the state of New Jersey. Despite declining unemployment and the opening of two new casinos in 2018, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and the Ocean Resort Casino, the announced renaissance of Atlantic City awaits coming.
