Its geographical location and extraordinary environment could make Wewak a reputation as a pretty city. Spread between two peninsulas and along a bay offering a long white sand beach, dominated by a hill with, in the back, mountains covered with jungle, the city does not lack any assets. Unfortunately, as is often the case in Papua, this potential is not exploited. Architecture is extremely poor and, more generally, maintenance is lacking. The erosion of the beach does not help, as does the tuna casing plant located in the city center. But the people of Wewak are particularly hospitable, and you will not lose anything in the streets. This will be the occasion for memorable meetings. The security situation is quite good, even if it is not advisable to venture alone at night. Pay attention on pay days (Wednesday every two weeks): the whole city gets drunk and the spirits can warm up quickly. The shopping center is made up of a street (The Center), which begins at the market, recently refurbished, and ends at the post, in front of the beach, where it joins Boram Raod, which runs along the bay until arriving at the airport. The hill overlooking the center, on the tip of the largest peninsula, is rather a residential area. Invaded by the Japanese, in 1942, without a shot fired since all white residents fled before the imperial landing, the city became the largest Japanese base in Papua. In August 1943, it was heavily bombed by the Allies, destroying more than 100 Japanese aircraft. It was in Wom Point, not far from the city, that the Japanese officially returned to New Guinea. Wewak is now hosting relatively large Japanese tourism. The city, which is the crossing point for those who wish to visit the River Sepik, has a wide choice of accommodation. For those who wish to extend their stay in Wewak after a few days on the Sepik, it is possible to discover the islands around the city. If one leaves in the morning, a day of boat will remain a great adventure; and for those who want to extend it, it is possible to spend the night on one of the islands, some tribes have rudimentary guesthouses. A unique opportunity to discover the lives of these islanders.
