The one sometimes called the most beautiful city in the Pacific is certainly the most pleasant city in Papua. The Papuasians themselves love to take a few days off by the sea. For this city of 30,000 people is probably the only country in the country to really move towards tourism, offering a choice of hotels at all rates. Completely rebuilt after the war, it is not its architecture that makes it pleasant but its urban planning. The ocean appears on every corner of the street, the seafront offers beautiful walks and the city is strewn with beautiful parks with beautiful ponds and tall and venerable fictories. The other characteristic of Madang is its numerous blows, huge bats that populate all the trees in the city and make a deafening noise when they fly each night. Last but not least, security is not a problem. The city should change very quickly, with a huge nickel mining project coming into existence in recent years. This means a lot of labor and new construction, as well as a strong influx of "migrants" from other provinces to seek work. The calms of Madang are now afraid to suffer the fate of Port Moresby or Lae…HistoryPrior to the arrival of the Westerners, trade was the lifeblood of the inhabitants of the Madang region. The sailors traded their products - potteries, shells, salt - to the east and in the mountains, via the Bundi region, against stone axes, feathers and women. After the visit of the Russian adventurer and anthropologist Nikolai Mikloukho-Maklaï, the Germans quickly arrived, eager to establish their new colonies. In 1884, the explorers Otto Finsch and Eduard Dallmann, both at the service of Chancellor Bismarck, touched the coasts of Madang. They then named the little Friedrich Wilhelmshafen, and founded the German New Guinea Kompanie. With the arrival of the first Lutheran missions, German settlers settled permanently to grow coffee, cotton and tobacco. Between 1890 and 1904 many missionaries joined the massive conversion effort to Christianity. Life was very hard: malaria was ravaging, nearly 300 German seamen died in less than a year. In 1899, the capital of New Guinea was transferred to New Pomerania (now New Britain). The Germans were hunted in 1914 by Australians, but religious missions are still there. On May 1, 1942, Madang was invaded by the Japanese. It subsequently became the scene of many intense fighting, causing many deaths on both sides, in what was called by historians the Finisterre Mountains Campaign. Completely destroyed, it was taken over by the Allies in April 1944. Since then, despite the presence of some industries in the province, Madang, still poorly developed, has become a haven of peace for many expatriates and ngos. With its 36,000 inhabitants in 2005, it seems to be happy to sink a peaceful life on the edge of the ocean… Let's hope that the effects of mass tourism still preserve this little corner of paradise for many years.
