This reserve is located in the center of the country, over 200 km south of Paramaribo. Established in 1998, it comprises the Raleighvallen, Tafelberg and Eilerts de Haangebergte reserves, and currently covers an area of over 1.6 million ha. Unesco included it on its list of natural world heritage sites in 2000 for its immense primary tropical forest. Accessible by plane or bus (5-hour journey from the capital) then pirogue (3 to 4 hours), it is here that Surinam's grandiose nature reveals its wonders: 400 species of birds, 5,000 species of plants as well as animals atypical of the region..
