Thanks to the meeting of the oceanic Guinea Current and the fresh waters of the Marowijne River, the reserve enjoys a special climate that has fostered the emergence of a unique biodiversity. While the primary aim of the reserve's creation was to protect the turtles' nesting grounds, its preservation naturally encompasses the whole of its flora and fauna. Bird lovers will be amazed by the number of species that can be observed here. Several Indian villages are located within the reserve, and their inhabitants are authorized to fish, hunt, gather and cultivate the land on a small scale.
