50 km from Amsterdam and 23 km from The Hague, Leiden, with its 121,000 inhabitants (including 20,000 students) is the fourth largest city in the province of South Holland. In Dutch, the city is called Leiden, but the official French translation is Leyde. This city has many charms and assets that make it one of the most interesting cities in the country. Leiden is the city where its greatest painter, Rembrandt, was born in 1606 and where the first tulip bloomed. Two words sum up the tone of this lively city that was for a long time a sort of cultural rival to Amsterdam: history and culture. It is the second largest canal city after Amsterdam.Leiden is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands. At the end of the Groenhazen canal, you will find on the right the famous Rapenburg canal, one of the oldest and largest canals in the country and also recognized as the most beautiful canal in Europe.
