The medieval town of Zierikzee with its picturesque little streets, gabled houses and three large gates from the 14th century, has been classified as a national heritage site. The imposing Zuidhavenpoort with its 4 small pointed towers and its carillon is remarkable. The town hall with its Louis XV style wedding hall is also worth a visit. On the old harbor are moored in the summer historic old ships. The city has more than 11 000 inhabitants. It was once one of the most powerful cities in the province. It was independent until 1997 and now forms the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland with all the other municipalities.
