Schwangau is a farming village 4 km from Füssen, but not just any village. It's the "village of royal castles", the community that's home to two royal castles: Neuschwanstein, the most famous castle of Ludwig II of Bavaria, and Hohenschwangau Castle, built by his father Maximilian II of Bavaria. Every year, these two architectural and artistic marvels attract over 1.5 million visitors from all over the world. The styles of the two castles are completely different: Hohenschwangau, a neo-Gothic castle, boasts a warmly-colored facade and looks more like a feudal building. Opposite it is Neuschwanstein (literally: New Swan Rock), built by Ludwig II in commemoration of Richard Wagner, whose patron he was. Legend has it that Walt Disney drew inspiration from Neuschwanstein for the castle in Sleeping Beauty.
