Once past the junction leading to Buccoo, the Shirvan Road continues towards Mount Irvine Bay, dominated by the mountain of the same name and home to the island's historic golf course. Surfers come here for the quality of the rollers. Beyond Mount Irvine, the road changes name to Grafton Road, where a number of confidential luxury villas and resorts have sprung up in recent years, without harming the surrounding nature too much. We like Mount Irvine beach, but it's not as touristy as Crown Point or Castara. The 800 m stretch of beach has two sides. One is maintained by the local authorities and the other by the Mt. Irvine Bay Hotel, and both sides are open to the public. The northern end (maintained by the local authority) has large rollers, ideal for surfing from November to April. Picnic huts are strategically placed with panoramic views over the bay. The side maintained by the hotel also hosts a restaurant and bar.
