Taranaki National Park (formerly Egmont National Park) was created in 1900 and covers 33,543 hectares. It embraces the whole of Mount Taranaki, a dormant volcano that rises to 2,518 meters. Its fierce beauty is matched only by the difficulty of its ascent. It is, from some angles, the replica of Mount Fuji in Japan. Its cone is not perfect, however, as it has a second crater, Fantham's Peak, at an altitude of about 2,000 meters to the south. Its soil is made of ashes and the vegetation contrasts with the rich fertile plains of the surroundings. Many walks are possible in the area (information from the DOC).
