Doubtless Bay was named by Captain James Cook, in 1769, having been unable to enter it but certain that it was a bay (hence the "no doubt"). Much less touristy than Bay of Islands, it has splendid stretches of sand and has remained intact. Mangonui ("big shark" in Maori) is the center of activity. In 1831, settlers arrived and established a whaling and kauri export port. According to legend, it was in Taipa, in the 10th century, that the Polynesian explorer Kupe first arrived on Aotearoa. To the north, the Karikari Peninsula is off the beaten track and remains undeveloped.
