САХАЛИНСКИЙ-САХАЛИНСКИЙ. Situated in the centre of Sakhalin, the port city of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinski (10,000 inhabitants) was founded in 1869. Anton Chekhov, who stopped in Alexandrovsk in 1890, dedicated a book to his trip to the island of Sakhalin where he had studied prison life. It found a wide audience among an outraged public opinion, and voices were raised against the inhuman treatment of convicts. A century later, a new prison was opened on the island, under the name of "A. Chekhov and Sakhalin", a museum of history and literature was opened on the island.
