Leaving the town of Soufriere, you will pass through authentic small villages such as Choiseul (named after the Duke of Choiseul) and Laborie before arriving in Vieux-Fort. Second largest town after Castries, Vieux-Fort was the center of the island's sugar industry in the 18th century. A few examples of colonial architecture in the old town around Clark Street bear witness to this. Legend has it that the French buccaneer Blackbeard had his headquarters there. As a base for American troops during the Second World War, the city is criss-crossed by underground tunnels that were once used to store food and ammunition.
