Founded in 1650 by the French, the town owes its name to Marshal de Castries, Minister of the Navy, who temporarily returned Saint Lucia to France under the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. The French-sounding street names still bear witness to the city's colonial past. As the seat of government, its port is one of the most important in the West Indies. Along the narrow streets, you can still spot a few colonial-style buildings painted in pastel shades. In the south-east of the city, stalls line Jeremie Street and the atmosphere is lively. The local atmosphere reaches its peak at the town market, one of the most colorful on the island.
