If you arrive in Dominica by boat, Roseau, the capital, is the gateway. You'll discover a city bursting with life, except on Sundays, the day of rest, when virtually all the shops are closed. Minibus services depart from Roseau to other towns on the island. If you'd like to rent a car, there are plenty of rental companies and guides waiting for you at the ferry terminal. The town center, with its checkerboard layout, is small and easy to get around on foot. The streets are lively, especially on Saturdays, when a variety of stalls flourish on the sidewalks. The small capital boasts a number of beautiful Creole houses built of colorful wood. Most have not been restored since the end of the colonial era and are in poor condition. They bear witness to the French influence and present a curious mix of simple, solid, weather-resistant structures and rich ornamentation. As you stroll along the streets, you'll come across a number of old churches, the oldest with stone foundations dating back 300 years.Don't hesitate to stroll through the New Market to discover the fruits, vegetables and other products of the island, or the Old Market to buy souvenirs, with a must-see at Zeb Kweyol, the local cosmetics store. The Dominica Museum is quick to visit and offers a good overview of the island's history. To the east of downtown, the Botanical Garden is a 15-minute walk away. Don't hesitate to climb up (10-15 min additional walk) to get a better view of Roseau and its bay.
