165 km south of Mumbai. Murud and its impregnable Janjira fortress are among the most popular holiday destinations for Mumbaikars. The fishing village of Murud, in the Raigad district, boasts a number of assets: long sandy beaches, Nandgaon and Kashid, fringed with coconut palms and palm trees, a pleasant year-round climate, historical remains of Abyssinian, Marathi and Portuguese domination, clean air and a very pleasant tranquility. Just 3 km off the coast, you'll find Janjira Fort, reached by boat from the small village of Rajpuri. This fort, which has never been conquered in its 350-year history, boasts high ramparts and 22 bastions. Another fort lies 10 km north of Janjira: Padmadurg Fort, also known as Kasa Fort. Also built by Shivaji, it can be visited but is far less impressive than Janjira.
