Uda Walawe has been developed on an area of natural elephant habitat. It is THE African reserve of the country: the dry soils and the less tropical landscape make one think of a safari in the savannah. The creation of a reservoir on the Walawe River provides a huge drinking trough for the animals. The most favourable periods for observing pachyderms are from January to March and August to October. If you wish to attend the bottle-feeding of young elephants, please visit the Uda Walawe Elephant Transit Home, which is located at Uda Walawe Village, outside the park.
