100 km west of Arugam Bay. At the foot of the mountainous area, it is the extreme limit of the Eastern region as defined in this guide. Like Buttala and Monaragala, Wellawaya is essentially a landmark for those who choose to change their itinerary with: Badulla to the north (52 km); Nuwara Elliya, via Bandarawella, to the northwest (87 km); Ohiya (eastern entrance to Horton Plains) (64 km), Ratnapura (122 km), and Siharaja Forest (154 km) to the west; and Tissamaharama (61 km) and Hambantota (77 km) to the south. If the city does not have a particular charm, it can however constitute an interesting base to visit the area
